Turning Dreams Into Reality By Changing Perspective

Why The Most Inappropriate Pose Is Called The Kind Of Asanas

"Sometimes what looks like a person standing upside down is actually a person standing for their dreams."

This year, this week, exactly on my birthday, something happened...

... that unexpectedly broke my heart....

... and taught me the biggest lesson of the year. Actually, every year I change the direction of my life on or just after my birth date. Even though that I was waiting it with anticipation this year I was caught in the whirlpool of emotions again.

I offered to share the story of the headstand as a motivational and inspirational speech and to perform a demonstration of it during an end of year assembly at a school. Initially, I was given permission. Then, the next day, I was told I could not do it because someone felt and thought it was 'inappropriate' and 'not safe'.

For a moment, I felt disappointed and heart broken. Interestingly enough, after the refusal I came across and read a historical article about the time when women fought about their rights to vote. It was named:

'How did women get the vote? Persuasion or violence?'

The learning objectives were about the different methods used by suffragists and suffragettes and understanding why some men and women opposed them. I found this to be very timely appeared article and well connected with the challenge of my inner word that day. There was a question in a highlighted box that made me stop and think. It was saying:

'What do you think?

What is the best way to bring about change?'

And then a question arose within me:

"What am I not seeing yet?" - as 'I never Lose, I either Learn or Win'.

And then, almost instinctively, I turned myself upside down—literally and metaphorically. I realised something profound:

"I wasn't upset because I wasn't allowed to do a headstand. I was upset because I knew that the speech I was about to give was going not only to motivate and inspire the audience but to stick in their memory for a lifetime and that memory was going to return in moments of weakness, helplessness and experiencing life difficulties. I know that as I personally had encountered many difficulties in life and the memories of speeches like that had carried me forward. I could have given something significant through the opportunity that had been taken away from me and the audience, just because my point and enquiry was not perceived correctly. But then I realised something. Nobody can stop me telling the story of the headstand. In fact, by being told 'no', I found something bigger than the headstand itself. I found my signature message."

"Sometimes the dream and opportunities we lose gives birth to the purpose we find."

In fact, the headstand wasn't rejected. It was redirected. What looked like rejection became redirection. What felt like disappointment became purpose. And what started as a headstand became a story about human potential.

"The headstand itself teaches that when life turns us upside down, we can either panic—or discover a new perspective."

In fact, a headstand is one of the greatest teachers in my life.

And perhaps it is one of the greatest metaphors for achieving anything we desire.

I will take the time and space in this article to share with you the story of my headstand journey.

The Dream Before the Headstand

People often see the final result.

They see someone upside down and think, "That looks easy."

What they do not see are the years behind it and the consistent daily training that one has to do to achieve that stunning performance.

It took me eight months of 60 to 90 minutes daily practice before I could do a headstand with the support of a wall.

And it took another two years before I could confidently do it without any support at all.

For months, nothing seemed to happen.

I failed.

I wobbled.

I fell.

I questioned myself.

Yet I continued.

Every day, I dedicated between sixty to ninety minutes to preparing my body.

Not just my neck.

Not just my shoulders.

Everything.

I had to strengthen my wrists, arms, upper body, shoulders, back, core, legs and feet. My shoulders were tight and closed, so I had to learn patience. I had to develop flexibility alongside strength.

Like any dream, the foundation mattered more than the final picture.

Growth Happens Before Results Are Visible

Unstable headstand

Perhaps the greatest lesson was that progress is often invisible.

For eight months, I could not perform the pose.

Nothing spectacular happened.

No applause.

No success story.

Just practice.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Isn't life like that?

How many people give up on a dream or a goal because they don't see immediate results?

How many businesses close too early?

How many students stop believing in themselves because they haven't achieved something yet?

Seeds grow underground before they appear above the surface.

Human beings are no different.

Nutrition Matters

One lesson that surprised me was the importance of what I put into my body.

Turning upside down means changing pressure and circulation within the body. I became increasingly mindful about what I consumed.

I started eating cleaner.

I became aware of substances that overstimulate the nervous system.

I learned that our body and mind are deeply connected.

Performance is not built on motivation alone.

It is built on habits.

Sleep.

Movement.

Breathing.

Nutrition.

Recovery.

Everything matters.

The Biggest Obstacle Was Fear

The wall became my friend.

Eventually, I became stable enough to hold the pose with support.

But when the wall disappeared, fear appeared.

I remember my first attempts without support.

I failed.

And then I realised something.

I wasn't focusing on success.

I was focusing on falling.

I was mentally rehearsing failure.

"Where attention goes, energy flows."

Our minds are incredibly powerful.

If we constantly imagine what might go wrong, we begin creating it.

Many people spend their lives focused on fear instead of focused on possibility.

Fear of failure.

Fear of rejection.

Fear of not being good enough.

Fear of what others might think.

Fear becomes the wall.

And yet, the real work is learning how to regulate ourselves while fear is present. Life is not always safe and stable but exactly in these shaky moments one finds the ground beneath and learn to trust. This is where growth starts.

Breathing Changed Everything

The final breakthrough wasn't physical.

It was breath.

I discovered that if my breathing became irregular, my balance disappeared.

When my nervous system became dysregulated, so did my body.

But when I breathed slowly and calmly, something extraordinary happened.

My body trusted me.

Balance appeared.

And one day, without forcing, I simply found myself upside down.

Stable.

Peaceful.

Free.

The headstand taught me that success isn't about fighting harder.

Sometimes success is about becoming calmer.

What a Headstand Teaches Us

A headstand teaches:

  • Patience.

  • Discipline.

  • Consistency.

  • Perseverance.

  • Focus.

  • Courage.

  • Self-awareness.

  • Emotional regulation.

  • Breath control.

  • Trust.

  • Resilience.

  • Balance.

  • Delayed gratification.

  • Growth mindset.

Aren't these exactly the qualities required to achieve anything in life???

A business.

A degree.

A healthy relationship.

A home.

A dream.

A better future.

The headstand is simply a visible example of invisible qualities.

The Science Behind Inversions

Sirsasanas

In yoga, Headstand (Sirsasana) is often called "The King of Asanas."

Research and clinical observations suggest that when practised safely and appropriately, inversions may:

Support the Nervous System

Headstands encourage calm, concentration and awareness. Many practitioners report reduced stress and increased clarity. Inversions may positively influence the autonomic nervous system and heart rate variability.

Build Strength

A safe headstand develops strength throughout the shoulders, arms, upper back and core, improving posture and body awareness.

Enhance Balance and Confidence

Learning to be upside down challenges fear and develops self-trust and resilience.

Assist Circulation and Lymphatic Flow

Inversions may encourage venous return and lymphatic drainage, helping reduce swelling and promoting fluid balance.

Promote Mindfulness

Being upside down demands presence. There is little room for worrying about yesterday or tomorrow. You become fully here.

Increase Breath Awareness

Stable breathing and balance are inseparable. The pose teaches self-regulation from the inside out.

Encourage a New Perspective

Perhaps the greatest gift is symbolic.

When we literally turn ourselves upside down, we begin seeing life differently.

Sometimes solutions appear when we change perspective.

Safety Matters

Headstands are advanced postures and are not suitable for everyone. They should be approached gradually and with proper guidance, especially by those with neck injuries, osteoporosis, glaucoma, cardiovascular conditions, or blood pressure concerns.

And this is perhaps another lesson:

"Wisdom is not knowing how far to push. Wisdom is knowing when to pause."

A Headstand Is a Story About Human Potential

Today, I no longer see a headstand as a yoga posture.

I see it as a story and an inner journey.

A story about dreams.

A journey about growth.

One about becoming.

And I believe every child and every adult deserves to hear that story and experience that journey.

Because the headstand is not the goal.

The headstand is simply proof that extraordinary things become possible when we develop the qualities required to achieve them.

Whether your dream is to pass your exams, start a business, buy a home, write a book, become healthier or change the world, the principle is the same.

The dream itself matters.

But who we become on the journey matters even more.

Bringing the Headstand Story to Schools and Organisations

I now offer interactive talks and workshops for primary schools, secondary schools, colleges, universities, businesses and wellbeing events.

These sessions combine storytelling, mindset, emotional regulation, breathwork, yoga and practical experiences tailored to each organisation's values, ethos and desired outcomes.

Topics include:

  • Growth mindset.

  • Resilience.

  • Courage.

  • Emotional regulation.

  • Breath and nervous system awareness.

  • Confidence and self-belief.

  • Perseverance.

  • Teamwork.

  • Mental wellbeing.

  • Dreams, goals and human potential.

And yes…

Sometimes I finish with a headstand.

Not because it is impressive.

But because it reminds us that what seems impossible today may simply be waiting for the person we are becoming.

Advanced headstand

Dear reader,

We officially entered the space of the Heart Chakra. It is all about emotions, passion, compassion, connection, empathy and love. Writing this article I started from the back going to the front. This is all about the wisdom of the Heart Chakra.

Now let me ask you - have you felt the value of this article? Did it help you perceive a certain situation through a different lenses? This article has a hidden learning. It is not about the headstand or its story. Headstand itself belongs to the Crown chakra space. Here I wrote about something deeper and more meaningful. I will ask you a few more questions with the hope you to find the hidden message.

How long does it takes you to bounce back after a failure or a rejection? How does receiving a refusal affects you in the short and in the long term? What thoughts and emotions arise inside of you when you face a challenging situation in life, work, business or in your relationship? How much time do you dedicate to these thoughts and emotions? Do you fight with them? Are you able to let them go or to transform them in some way into something useful and beneficial for you and the others? Are you able to look at the challenge from another angle and to redirect it into a possibility or even an opportunity for growth? What do you think have to happen to enable you to SWITCH from a loser to a winner?
